Roger Jacob

List of Arrangements

Roger Jacob’s arrangements of folk songs, traditional songs and spirituals are straightforward but supremely well-written examples of their genre. They can be tackled by choirs of limited ability who will always find something in them to develop their technique. However, more experienced singers will also find much to relish in these settings. The harmonies flow most satisfyingly and textures are always interesting, but above all the music is written with an innate, indeed consummate, understanding of the capabilities and natural resonances of the choral voice. All of these arrangements were written 30-35 years ago for a chorus of (non-music) undergraduates at Aberdeen University , where Roger Jacob, their conductor, was a lecturer in music. They have lost none of their freshness, or capacity for sheer delight in music-making. They are classics of their kind.
