This magnificent work was written for the coronation of George V in 1911. The source was a tatty original copy discovered by the editor in a second-hand bookshop. Having ascertained that the original publishers had no interest in the work, Philip Cowling has edited and computer-set the music for modern performance. It is only in exceptional circumstances that it would be found appropriate for liturgical use, but it would make a fine concert item for any choir with the resources. The forces are used with great imagination and resourcefulness and there are some interesting individual touches in the writing - eg the Hosanna in the highest in the Benedictus is soft throughout.
