The Fagus Collection of Edwardian Preludes
The Fagus Collection of Edwardian Preludes
Thirteen Pieces for Organ by Walter Alcock, Myles B. Foster, Alfred Hollins,
John E. West and William Wolstenholme.
The 'Edwardian' in the title of this collection needs to be taken as a broad
indication of the style of these little pieces, it is not chronologically
precise. In this period a huge amount of music for church service use was
published, and of this a very large proportion was extraordinarily
uninteresting, worthy doubtless, but fatally dull.
However, a detailed
examination of some of the contemporary publications does unearth a few pieces
of substance, charm and, sometimes, eloquence; it is suggested that they might
well find a use even today.
